The Rounders

1914 · US

Directed by Charlie Chaplin

Chaplin and Roscoe Arbuckle as two husbands who have had enough of their wives and take the night, and then the river, as far as it will go. Keystone, 1914, directed by Chaplin: they drink, they fight, they steal a boat, they fall in. The wives (Phyllis Allen, Minta Durfee) are not foils; they are the other half of the joke. It is a two-drunk picture before Chaplin had fully invented the Tramp, and you can see Arbuckle's physical size doing work Chaplin would later do with a cane. One of the Keystones that still plays as a complete idea, not a pile of park gags.
