Directed by Henry Hathaway
Henry Hathaway's 1933 remake of Zane Grey's The Thundering Herd, later reissued as Buffalo Stampede. Randolph Scott and Harry Carey as hide hunters in 1874, Noah Beery as the outlaw stepfather, Buster Crabbe in support. Paramount cut costs by matching Scott's hair and mustache to Jack Holt so they could drop in 1925 stampede footage. Pre-Code, public domain, sixty-odd minutes of a market that treated the herd as inventory and the people who lived with it as scenery. The opening title is Grey's: the white man again, the hides, Sprague's trading post. Hathaway would do this cast all year. This is the one about what was left of the buffalo.
