One A.M.

Chaplin alone, 1916, Mutual: a drunk comes home and the house becomes an opponent. The stuffed lynx, the staircase, the folding bed, the rug that will not stay. Directed by Chaplin; he is the only actor who matters. One A.M. is a solo, closer to a music-hall turn than a story, and it is one of the Mutuals that proves he did not need Edna, or a park, or a cop. He needed a room that hated him.
