Pool Sharks

Fields's screen debut, 1915, Gaumont: two men play pool for a woman, and the balls begin to misbehave. Two reels, or less. The trick photography is the point — balls that jump, vanish, refuse the pocket — but so is Fields's body, already a man at war with furniture. It is a vaudeville act that cinema has not yet learned to leave alone.
