Directed by Oleksandr Dovzhenko
A Ukrainian village during collectivization. It opens with an old man lying down in an orchard, eating a last pear and dying, and nobody grieves much. Then the tractor arrives, the young man who brought it walks home at dusk and starts to dance alone in the dust of the road, and a kulak shoots him mid-step. Dovzhenko gives the funeral to the whole village, the grief to his fiancée, and the last word to rain on apples. Moscow called it pantheism, which was accurate and beside the point.
